Understanding the Basics of Solar Panel Operation
Solar panels have emerged as a leading global energy solution for one simple reason: they harness renewable energy. Put succinctly, as long as the sun shines, solar power is available. Unlike finite resources like gas and coal, solar energy is inexhaustible.
Without delving into overly technical details, it's crucial for consumers to grasp the fundamentals of solar energy. Hence, we'll simplify the workings of solar panels for your understanding.
In simple terms, solar panels capture the sun's UV rays and transform them into electricity using photovoltaic cells. These cells get energized when sunlight touches them, producing a direct current. To power household appliances, the energy generated needs to be converted from direct current to alternating current using an inverter, which is a standard component of every solar system.
Energy Price Guarantee
In October 2022, the Government implemented the Energy Price Guarantee as a replacement for the previous price cap, aiming to curb the rise of energy costs. Here's what you should know about the Energy Price Guarantee:
The current Energy Price Guarantee is set at £2,500 per year for the period spanning from January to March 2023.
The rate is subject to quarterly review and adjustment. Accordingly, in April 2023, the rate will increase to £3,000.
The Energy Price Guarantee will be retained until April 2024, following an extension from its previous end date in April 2023.
From October 1, 2022, to March 2023, the average unit price for customers on a standard variable tariff is capped at 34.0p/kWh for electricity and 10.3p/kWh for gas, inclusive of VAT.
It's important to understand that the energy price guarantee doesn't impose a strict limit on how much households will pay. Instead, it represents a calculated figure based on what the 'average household' is likely to spend. Therefore, the amount you pay remains contingent upon your actual energy consumption.
Between January 1 and March 31, 2023, the Ofgem energy price cap surged to £4,279, with expectations of further increases throughout the year. Despite substantial bill hikes in recent months, the implementation of the price guarantee resulted in a lower actual increase compared to earlier predictions.
Energy Price Surge
In October 2022, average energy prices surged by 27%, marking a staggering 96% increase compared to the winter 2021/22 price cap. Further increases are anticipated, with energy prices set to rise by an additional 20% in April 2023. Gas costs have experienced a more significant increase, soaring by 141% since the winter of 2021/22, while electricity prices have risen by 65% during the same period.
As expenses continue to escalate, solar power is gaining popularity among households across the UK.
More Benefits of Solar Panels

Renewable Energy Source
Solar power stands out as a renewable energy source. As long as there's daylight, solar technology can generate power consistently. Unlike finite resources, such as fossil fuels, solar energy remains abundant and sustainable.

Environmental Contribution
Investing in solar panels contributes to combating the climate crisis and reducing carbon emissions. While there may be minimal pollution during manufacturing, solar power remains one of the cleanest energy sources globally.

Energy Storage Capability
With a battery storage system, you can store excess energy generated by your solar panels for later use, ensuring continuous power supply even after sunset.

Earning Potential
Through the Government's Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), households can earn money by selling surplus renewable electricity back to the grid. With a smart meter providing export readings, eligible systems can generate additional income, potentially around £100 per year, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Low Maintenance
Residential solar panels boast an impressive lifespan of 25 years or more with minimal maintenance requirements. Positioned at an angle, rain naturally cleanses the panels, maintaining their efficiency over time. Thus, once installed, solar panels demand little attention, making them a hassle-free energy solution for homeowners.
Setting Up Residential Solar Panels
Pairing your solar panels with a battery system is the optimal choice for homeowners seeking maximum efficiency from their solar panel setup. A comprehensive installation not only maximizes cost savings but also enhances the flexibility of your residential solar system.
At Solar Trader, we are dedicated to solar power and committed to excellence in our approach. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your solar panel installation.
Opting to mount solar panels on the roof of your business premises is widely favored. Our installation services cover various roof types, including flat roofs, ensuring versatility. However, the effectiveness of solar panels significantly hinges on direct exposure to sunlight, making this a crucial factor to address during installation.
